2008’s Paris Motor Show introduced a cavalcade of electric and battery operated automobiles to the public. One missing - a SMART Car electric vehicle. Thankfully, marketing manager for Smart USA Pitt Moos (yes, that is his real name) stated at the show: “Two years ago nobody said an electric vehicle was even possible, today everybody is saying, ‘We’re going to make one.”

Smart announced plans to build all-electric vehicles for Europe by the end of the decade. But it hasn’t said what its intentions are for the North American market.

Moos continued: “The challenge has always been the battery. We have just in the past couple of months become comfortable about a method of making lithium batteries for cars. Now some people are starting to quote Obama: Yes, we can.”

Guess we know which way the people at Smart swing when it comes to elections.

The SMART Car is still a recent addition to our North American highways. But it has already been ten years (10!) since the very first Smart car hit the streets of Europe. Smart’s ForTwo was initially offered for sale in Germany, followed by eight over European countries. If you’re in the US you’ve only been seeing Smart cars on the road since January of this year. They are becoming a hot commodity already, and will most likely be one of the best selling city vehicles in years to come.

Smart’s design was simple - create a light weight yet safe vehicle that could comfortably seat two people plus a set of luggage. High on the engineering list was also fuel consumption - it needed to be efficient but also have the ability to carry more than a gallon of gas. Smart achieved this, and also created a vehicle with minimal CO2 emissions. Smart’s city coupe (which later became the infamous ForTwo) quickly garnered a cult following.

Smart’s diesel engine creates 45 horsepower on just 3.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers - not that you need too much petrol to get from SoHo to the village. Smart’s ForTwo is a unique car that will undoubtedly continue to impress and strike curiosity in people as the car maker continues to invade the United States with their tiny auto. It’s already been a work of art - as the vehicle was on display at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC in 2002.

Test conducted by the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Smart Car Fortwo top marks in its class. The 1800 pound Smart Car Fortwo is currently the tiniest car for sale in the US. The results of this test combined with rising fuel cost could mean a good year for the automaker. The front of the vehicle passed the 40 mile per hour frontal crash test as well as a 31mph side test. Institute president Adrian Lund said, “All things being equal in safety, bigger and heavier is always better,” continuing, “But among the smallest cars, the engineers of Smart did their homework and designed a high level of safety into a very small package.” This popular European car was first introduced to the US in January, which is typically a market for large trucks and SUVs. With gas prices skyrocketing out of control this might be the best time for Smart Car to enter the market.
